If we imagine the New Balance 990v3, it’s likely that only one color comes to mind: gray. However, there is life beyond the most characteristic and famous shade of New Balance. For example, in caramel, black, and gray mesh, just like the sneakers we present to you today.
New Balance has a real penchant for color combinations to match everything in your wardrobe. A good example is exemplified by the flagship 990v3. The brand intends to triple its Made in USA line by Teddy Santis by 2023, and one of the leading silhouettes is the 990v3. After appearing on YCMC for a collaboration project, the model is back in the spotlight in a new black and brown colorway.

Courtesy New BalanceNeutral tones take center stage in this upcoming release and recall the shades that brands like JJJJound have used in the past in their partnerships with New Balance. Smooth suede leather overlays and flanks are treated in black, while beige accents pop on the leather linings along the collars and tips, as well as on the heel panels housing the Made in USA branding.
Mesh reinforcements expand the palette with a mix of dark brown and gray, while laces and inner linings have a similar hue to sails. Completing these versatile sneakers is an ENCAP support midsole that creates a color contrast between the classic gray and white panels, while the sole is black and gray.
The New Balance 990 is the queen of casual sports footwear. The giant N is common on the feet of executives when not wearing a suit or on engineering, economics, and business students. Not to be reductive, but they seem to be part of their uniform. Lately, they have also become the footwear of those who know fashion better. The peculiar thing is that in 1982, the brand founded in Boston was not the choice for casual Fridays but a cult brand among runners.
Why do we talk about 1982? In that year, New Balance’s story changed forever. In conjunction with the World Cup in Spain, the company introduced a new range of shoes, the 990.
The New Balance 990 was the very first to feature the giant N on the sides. This logo is the work of Terry Heckler, and the 990 was chosen to kick off a different strategy from the usual for the company: it was a more expensive footwear compared to those of its rivals, Nike and adidas.
Since 1982, New Balance has introduced new versions of its 990 sneakers. However, the second version took a long time to reach the market. It did so in 1998 with slight aesthetic variations, alongside significant improvements in materials and technology.
Three years later, New Balance introduced a new denomination for the 990, extending it to the 990X. The first new model, called 991, featured a newly conceived midsole that highlighted the Abzorb cushioning, a pillar of New Balance’s running models.
