The World’s Most Expensive Sneakers

How much can a pair of sneakers be worth? Thousands of euros, even. Especially if the sneaker in question is a limited edition, perhaps with the help of some international celebrities like Justin Timberlake or Pharrell Williams, or even Eminem, just to name a few, who might have worn them during one of their tours. StockX, one of the most well-known re-selling platforms in the world for sneakers and streetwear, has compiled a list of the 10 most expensive sneaker models for sale on their platform. Vintage pieces, practically unfindable with very few existing pairs, yet capable of driving a crazy market fueled by sneakerheads – collectors from around the world who buy branded sneakers to collect them like jewels, hoping their value will continue to increase over time.

1. Nike Air Mag Back To The Future BTTF (2016): 22,925 euros
Many remember them as the iconic sneakers worn by Marty McFly in the second installment of the Back to the Future saga, where the character was transported to the year 2015. Few know that it was Nike itself that designed them specifically for the film in 1989. Therefore, it’s no coincidence that there are only 89 extremely rare and precious pairs of this model, a number chosen in honor of the year of the film’s release. Just a few days ago, the news broke that they are back on sale … in New York.

2. Air Jordan Kobe PE Pack Retro 8 Retro 3 (2016): 12,011 euros
The Air Jordan Kobe pack included two pairs of Lakers PE Air Jordans that Kobe Bryant wore during the NBA season of 2002/2003, a period when the then number 8 player for the Lakers lost his lucrative contract with Adidas due to well-known legal problems and wore models from different brands before signing an exclusive contract with Nike the following summer. Both models are characterized by white uppers and colorful details inspired by the official colors of the Los Angeles team.

3. Nike Dunk SB Low Paris (2002): 9,987 euros
The Nike Dunk was originally created in 1985 as a basketball shoe, but it was quickly adopted by the skateboarding community and redesigned in 2002 to better suit the needs of these new users. Nike’s strategy was to distribute the model in limited quantities and exclusively through independent skate shops. Each SB Dunk had its own story behind it, contributing to the creation and development of a community of shoe enthusiasts.

4. Air Jordan 4 Retro Eminem Carhartt (2015): 8,806 euros
The model, made in collaboration with Eminem, was released in 2015 to celebrate the fifteenth anniversary of the Marshall Mathers LP. Only 10 pairs were produced, which Eminem gave to his closest friends and family. The proceeds were entirely donated to the Marshall Mathers Foundation, a charity organization dedicated to helping disadvantaged youth in Detroit, Michigan, and surrounding communities. Ironically, Shady didn’t keep a pair for himself! The model was created in collaboration with Carhartt, a well-known American casual streetwear brand.

5. Air Jordan 3 Retro Legends of Summer (2013): 8,199 euros
Designed and worn by Justin Timberlake and Jay-Z for the 2013 Legends of Summer tour, these sneakers stand out not only for their color but also for the combination of high-quality materials that a true collector (like Timberlake himself) wouldn’t miss: suede, red patent, and snakeskin. The model was released in a limited edition only among the family and friends of the two singers, to the point that only a small and lucky group of selected fans managed to get a pair for themselves.

6. Air Jordan 5 Retro Fab Five PE (2017): 7,756 euros
Fab Five is the name used in slang for the Air Jordan V. The shoe design is inspired by the Wolverines, the unforgettable NCAA team of the ’90s. The Fab Five were the five players who made history in basketball under the colors of the University of Michigan: Juwan Howard, Jimmy King, Ray Jackson, Chris Webber, and Jalen Rose. The most interesting detail is the back, which doesn’t feature the usual Air Jordan logo but a gesture stylized and designed by none other than Tinker Hatfield (better known as “the architect of Air” / “the father of Air Max”), representing the Five Times, the 5 times the team called a timeout, resulting in a penalty costing them the game and the coveted tournament final in March.

7. Adidas Human Race NMD Pharrell x Chanel (2017): 7,462 euros
Born from the collaboration between adidas Originals, Pharrell Williams, and the French fashion giant Chanel, these sneakers come in total black uppers, white boost soles, and the inscription Pharrell on the left shoe and Chanel on the right one. The limited edition, created with creative director Karl Lagerfeld, was launched in March 2017 at the Seoul flagship store. For Pharrell Williams, who was also the first man to be part of a promotional campaign for the French fashion house, it wasn’t his first experience as a designer: he had previously co-created a sneaker capsule for Chanel with Adidas featuring the Pharrell x Chanel x Adidas Nmd Human Race model.

8. Nike Air Mag Back To The Future BTTF (2011): 7,261 euros
Although the 2016 edition is rarer, Nike had already released 1,500 pairs of shoes identical to those used by Marty McFly during his time travel in 2015. After the movie’s release, many fans and enthusiasts had hoped that Nike would actually start mass-producing that shoe model, capable, among other things, of self-lacing, but that hope was never fully realized until the limited first edition went on sale. The proceeds from the sales went to the Michael J. Fox Foundation, created by the protagonist of the legendary saga for Parkinson’s Disease research (a disease the actor has been suffering from since 1991).

9. Air Jordan 3 Retro DJ Khaled Grateful (2017): 7,243 euros
Air Jordan always sets the trend with its footwear, and every release is a guaranteed sellout, all within a few hours. The model is the result of the first collaboration between Air Jordan and DJ Khaled. The shoe, in fire red color, was made with elephant print on the upper and heel, characteristic of the model. The color choices were inspired by Khaled’s passion for the Miami Heat and the Jordan 1 High “Bulls” model. But the real gem of the model is the jumpman logo on the heel, featuring the inscription “We the best.” To top it off, the heel flap bears the three hashtags #majorkey, #blessup, and #jumpman23.

10. Nike Dunk SB Low Staple NYC Pigeon (2005): 7,168 euros
Introduced in New York, the shoe was conceived with the involvement of Jeff Ng, owner of Staple Design and Reed Space (a renowned streetwear shop), who envisioned the pigeon as a representative symbol of New York. The day the model was put on sale at Reed Space, the police had to show up, prompting even the New York Post to cover the incident. From that moment, the craze for SB Dunks captured the mainstream audience.
