There was a time when men didn’t even know what sneakers were. Nowadays, it’s quite the opposite as sneakers seem to have taken over the male wardrobe. They are worn all the time: both day and night, in formal and informal occasions. Companies study new models, apply materials and techniques to make them lighter for summer and more comfortable for long hours of wear. They make them appealing in design by collaborating with artists to create special collections. For example, MOA Master of Arts has invited the renowned Belgian street artist, Joachim, to create a special capsule collection that will be presented in Florence during Pitti Uomo. Also, a brand like Solovière Paris, already the winner of the Who’s on Next special prize, dedicates an important place in its upcoming summer collection to sneakers: with laces or straps, high or low versions, all infused with the typical French sophistication of the Parisian brand. Making their debut at Pitti Uomo, Swiss brand Bally launches a sneaker capsule inspired by four vintage models from the 1960s/80s: four reproductions of the most successful models of the era, with different styles ranging from hip-hop to tennis, running, and casual wear. The Pony collection also looks to the past, celebrating its connection with champion Spud Webb, who played, won, and outshined the greatest American basketball players of the ’80s with his Atlanta Hawks wearing Pony City Wings.
The Woolrich Footwear project continues for the summer season, reaffirming the brand’s presence in the footwear world with a project that reflects the brand’s values and its icon, born from the combination of typical elements of outdoor technical footwear with an urban, contemporary design. Ancient Egypt inspires the Watson&Parker collection, where the Dapper model – an icon of the brand – is offered in suede and printed canvas with a printed crust-effect woven upper, leather lining and profiles, cotton fabric with mesh print effect. The Saiph model by Mizuno1906 also features a 3D upper, once again combining the technological feel of Japanese design with the creative and personality touch of Made in Italy design.
The legendary French tennis by Bensimon remains true to itself: natural cotton and a strictly rubber toe; what makes them even more special, ironically, is their imperfection. The sneakers are hand-dyed by expert French craftsmen, creating an authentic and vintage effect, making each pair of Bensimon unique.
