If you are a fan of sneakers and art, and at this historical moment you feel nostalgic for a stroll in one of the world’s most important museums such as the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, where some of the greatest masterpieces of modern and contemporary art are exhibited, the Vans collection, launching on September 30, is the one for you. The reason is simple: Vans has collaborated with MoMA for a collection of shoes and clothing inspired by iconic works of artists like Salvador Dalí, Vasily Kandinsky, and Claude Monet.
“MoMA is excited to reveal its collaboration with Vans, a brand with a long tradition of supporting artistic expression,” explains Robin Sayetta, the Associate Director of Licensing and Partnerships at MoMA. “We accept a limited number of product collaborations and our goal is to introduce modern art to an increasingly wider audience. We are happy to be able to reach art lovers around the world through Vans‘ global network.
Each product has been designed with careful consideration and a deep love for art, best expressed in the Vans Classic models. For example, “The Persistence of Memory” from 1931, one of the most famous paintings by the visionary genius Salvador Dalí, has been reproduced on the side panels of Vans Old Skool Twist. The shoe structure has been modified to transcend the perception of reality and is finished with a rubber sole and a distorted side stripe that can also be found on Vans long-sleeve clothing and hoodies. From Kandinsky, a pioneer of abstract art, the work “Orange 1923” comes to life on the Vans Classic Slip-On with a reproduction of the artwork on the entire canvas upper and on a short-sleeve T-shirt, a crewneck sweater, and a cap. Among the artists involved in the project are also works by Claude Monet, who documented the constantly evolving French countryside during his plein air landscape work, characterized by careful observation of nature. The collaboration between Vans and MoMA features the Water Lilies series from 1914-1926, works created in Monet’s last years of life at his home in Giverny, replicated on Vans Authentic shoes and on a hat, a fleece sweatshirt, and a backpack.
The first collection of Vans and MoMA models will be available starting from September 30, 2020 on Vans.com, at Vans retail stores, MoMA Design Store locations, on store.moma.org, and in selected stores where Vans products are sold. Following this initial collection spotlighting Salvador Dalí, Vasily Kandinsky, and Claude Monet, another collection inspired by different artists will launch in November.
