Although the main line of New Balance refers to the great classics, it’s the Made in USA sneakers you’re looking for. Three simple words can evoke many things: Bruce Springsteen, malls, and hamburgers bigger than your face. A true pride for the United States that represent its identity as much as New Balance does.
These shoes are highly sought after both because they are less common and because of better manufacturing quality based on top-notch materials and advanced craftsmanship, as they are made in American territory. There is another reason to add to the list: Teddy Santis, founder of Aimé Leon Dore, now directs the Made in USA collection.
The fact that the New Yorker has chosen the 990v3 represents an interesting curiosity, considering his preference for the culture of the ’80s and ’90s. The 990v3 was originally released in 2012, making it one of the newer models in the modern classics catalog of New Balance. However, this particular colorway guarantees a vintage aesthetic that Santis has always favored.
The 990 line has a significant history and is considered by many as the most important sneaker series of New Balance. The original version came out in 1982, before sneakers were commonly worn as casual wear. The model was designed as a hi-tech running shoe with Encap cushioning and light, breathable mesh. It was almost too beautiful to wear for sweating in, and subsequent versions drew inspiration from the idea of lifestyle utilizing higher quality materials: leather and suede. By the time v3 arrived, the 990 was already a staple for sneakerheads, more suitable for elegant denim than workout pants.
And now we come to this latest novelty: a tonal reissue in shades of bottle green, olive, and moss found on the various suede and mesh panels. The intense burgundy N breaks up the ensemble, while the dark gray Encap sole completes the look. All made in the USA, of course, at one of New Balance’s facilities in New England. We are facing the type of sneaker that once worn, you would never want to take off. At least until the new colorway comes out.
The price is €240 and will be available from December 27, 2022, at New Balance.
