PUMA and Michael Lau drop a full collection of sneakers, apparel, and accessories inspired by the creation of a product for the “SAMPLE” collection.
Michael Lau has achieved worldwide success for his collectible miniatures. Over the years, he has continuously created timeless works of art and has been hailed as the “godfather of toy figures.” The inspiration behind the PUMA X MICHAEL LAU “SAMPLE” collection documents the designer’s mental journey and expresses the interaction between the artist and the product. Michael’s goal is not simply to create commercial products; rather, he is intrigued by the idea of exploring a concept that starts from scratch to become a work of art.
The pieces in the collection are characterized by hand-drawn pencil graphics, millimeter paper textures, and other playful design references that bring to life products with a hand-made inspired look and feel. Prints and details play around the idea of a “work in progress” collection, while graphics inspired by Lau’s “toy figures” add a personal touch to the pieces. Many items are adorned with phrases like “Reverse,” “Too Long,” and “Too Small,” common words in industries that emphasize the exploratory nature of the “SAMPLE” collection.
Bringing to life these unique design touches, the Mirage Mox features a print inspired by millimeter paper along with vibrant color pops. The Ralph Sampson Mid is embellished with digital prints and mismatched color accents on the laces and tongue. Completing the footwear in the collection are also the Ralph Sampson Lo and the RS-2K.
The standout apparel piece, the Two-Face Track Jacket, features a unique print with pencil graphics and a reversible style with a high collar. The clothing range includes a variety of items showcasing its concept like the Knit Pants with “SAMPLE” patchwork and the Women’s Pocket Hoodie Dress with a kangaroo pocket on the back. Accessories such as the Flat Brim Cap with a detachable “PUMA SAMPLE STUFF” graphic and the Tote Bag with unique graphic prints are included to conveniently store items.
