Sneakers, the new Converse celebrate Batman’s 80th anniversary

The relationship between Converse sneakers and comics is a long love story, recently crowned by a new capsule collection in honor of Batman: this year the “Dark Knight” turns 80, and the footwear brand has decided to celebrate the anniversary by creating six new models for superhero fans. It was on March 30, 1939, that the character of Batman made his debut in the story entitled “The Case of the Chemical Syndicate” in issue 27 of the magazine Detective Comics. The Converse sneaker series consists of two versions of Chuck 70 and two of All Stars, both high and low, exploring the origins of the famous comic: the inspiration comes from the ’50s, ’60s, and ’70s, drawing on the classic Pop style that became popular in those years. The first Chuck 70 model features a classic white canvas upper adorned with the pink and yellow logo first seen in issue 220 of Batman, published in March 1970, while the second features various reinterpretations of the same artwork overlaid on a black background.

For the Chuck Taylor All Star, in the high version, illustrations inspired by the cover of issue 190 of Batman, from March 1967, drawn by Carmine Infantino and inked by Joe Giella, were designed with the Dark Knight’s logos on details like tongues and lining. The second model of the Hi-Top is a reference to one of the oldest illustrations taken from Detective Comics, in issue 164, published in October 1950: this one depicts Batman and Robin, created by Win Mortimer and inked by George Roussos. Completing the collaborative collection are two pairs of low-top, one of which features the Joker from issue 251 of Batman, published in September 1973, and the other seven superhero logos on canvas, each introduced at different times between 1940 and 1986. All six models of the Converse x Batman capsule collection will be available from October 1st at selected retailers, and online starting from October 21st.
