Our favorite sneakers, city by city

If there is a product category that the market never seems to tire of, it’s sneakers. True objects of desire, they win over with comfort and versatility but also because, like few other items, they inject trendiness and design into every step. Now accepted in multiple occasions, they are worn with nonchalance from morning to night, from office to leisure time, from formal occasions to more relaxed ones. But is there a difference in the approach to purchasing choices based on where you live? That’s what the Big Fact Report from StockX, the e-commerce platform for the sale of shoes, streetwear, and tech gadgets, asked, revealing its results in April. By examining the most purchased items by consumers and their area of origin, the investigation clearly shows how for every city in the world there are specific trends, depending on local tastes and traditions deeply rooted in a specific place. When it comes to shoes, fashion substantially differs from metropolis to metropolis. Let’s see some examples specifically, starting from the assumption that sneaker sales continue to grow dramatically, in Italy and globally.

In Milan, the Nike Dunk Low is all the rage

Milan is the nerve center of Fashion Week, a privileged base for companies, brands, stores, and showrooms, a hub for stylists, designers, and schools, an inexhaustible location for events, openings, parties, fairs, and exhibitions dedicated to the luxury and fashion sector. Refined, exigent, practical, always up-to-date and never predictable, Milan chooses as its most popular model the Nike Dunk Low, the timeless silhouette of the brand with the unmistakable Swoosh, a star of a collab with Off-White that went viral, and worn by Instagrammers and fashion icons of all kinds. An ideal alternative for those who, in perfect Milanese mood, want a sneaker that easily matches everything, that never bores thanks to its neo-retro style, and that is also reasonably priced. In particular, the White Black versions, super graphic, and the Easter Candy versions, pastel, were the most purchased in 2022 by far, with a demand doubling compared to 2021.

London calling for the Balenciaga Track

Despite Brexit, London remains a cosmopolitan city, with an international outlook and always attentive to new trends, especially those coming from the streets. The capital of the UK stands out for its originality and counter-trend also in terms of sneakers. To conquer the subjects of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, come the Balenciaga Track Black, trainers with a dark, futuristic, ergonomic, and eclectic upper designed by the French fashion house, which manage to give a gritty and nonconformist touch to every outfit. Londoners also love them in the Runner Blue version, perfect for standing out in the gray and dull days of the City. Both models have seen sales increase fivefold compared to 2021.

In Paris, New Balance 327 Casablanca wins

Paris prefers understated models without too many frills, just like the New Balance 327 Casablanca. In the Green and Red Monogram versions, the sneakers from the American brand in collaboration with the luxury après-sport maison prove to be agile and elegant, perfect for romantic walks along the Seine or a stroll through the Montmatre neighborhood. Their demand compared to the same period in 2021 has quadrupled.

In Berlin, the obsession is called adidas

The underground capital of Germany seems unable to do without adidas, the Teutonic brand founded in 1949 in Bavaria. Originating to enhance athletes’ performances, today they are found on adults and children alike, worn in any context and occasion. Particularly liked are the adidas ZX, both in the 0000 Evolution White Bright Blue variant and in the 8500 Overkill Graffiti variant, perfectly in tune with the murals surrounding the Berlin metropolis. Essential and precise as only the Germans can be, but with that touch of originality that doesn’t hurt. They have seen a sevenfold increase compared to the previous year.

In Madrid, they like the Nike Air Max 1

Art and culture blend spontaneously but also with great respect for traditions in the Spanish capital, just like the monumental, iconic, and never-out-of-style Nike Air Max 1. Madrileños choose them in red, like the city’s flag, or white, to perfectly harmonize with the festive colors of their way of living. For this particular model, sales have quadrupled compared to 2021.

What’s happening overseas?

In Sydney, the ultimate must-have is the unmistakable model of the Yeezy Boost 350, in both light and black and red versions. Trainers designed in collaboration with adidas by the American rapper Kanye West are a true cult among Australians living there. In Los Angeles, the city beloved by movie stars, where popular traditions and unrestrained luxury coexist as if by magic, is conquered by the mix of street style and prominently displayed logos of the Nike Dunk Low Undefeated, an iconic sneaker that alone has seen triple the sales compared to 2021.

The map drawn up by StockX is a sort of original and functional depiction of tastes in sneakers, confirming that the peculiarities of the lifestyle of those living in a certain place inevitably impact purchasing choices.
