Men’s sustainable fashion, collections and capsules for Earth Day

For fashion, the future of the planet is becoming an increasingly strong and predominant theme. Brands large and small are committing with greater attention to create collections using natural, recycled materials, with one main goal: to reduce the impact on the environment. Recently, One Ocean Foundation conducted a study in collaboration with Sda Bocconi Sustainability Lab and under the patronage of the National Chamber of Italian Fashion, presenting some guidelines for a sustainable fashion industry, emphasizing the need to abandon the belief that the sector’s impact on the environment is limited to just the production phase, but that it involves all stages of the value chain, from raw material extraction to consumption, up to product disposal. The complete report is available here, below are some brands that are focusing on the future of the planet with their garments and accessories.

Canada Goose

After just presenting last week the update of the 2020 Sustainability Report, which started last year, and introducing new significant goals, from the use of recycled and organic fibers to the use of 100% sustainable packaging, Canada Goose presents this spring a collection of ultra-light down jackets in recycled nylon, while always maintaining high garment performance, a fundamental characteristic for the luxury outerwear brand. The garments are made of 100% recycled nylon from industrial waste, weighing 38 grams. Resistant to wind, snow, and rain, thanks to the packability feature, they can be easily folded into the inner pocket and carried using the backpack straps.

Asics

Asics presents the Earth Day Pack, the new collection of sustainable shoes and clothing. An environmentally friendly collection made through production processes based on circularity principles: to create new shoes, 5 tons of textile waste, equivalent to 25 thousand t-shirts, were used. From running to sportstyle, some of the most famous shoe models produced by the Japanese company are included. Each shoe features a sunflower design, symbolizing the brand’s commitment to protecting the Planet for future generations. Finally, the shoe tongue uses “mass dyeing,” an energy-saving technology that reduces CO2 emissions by 45% and water usage by 33% compared to traditional processes.

Timberland

The American brand presents today the Greenstride Solar Wave EK+ collection, rich in eco-friendly materials from heel to toe. In addition to the Regenerative Leather upper, the GreenStride soles are made with 75% renewable materials. Furthermore, Timberland announces a calendar of eco-friendly workshops in collaboration with Legambiente, to be held at Cascina Nascosta in Parco Sempione, Milan. Red

The historic hosiery manufacturer Rede, who launched the Red brand in 2010, combining their recognized expertise in materials and production with a more fashion-oriented component, presents socks made of organic cotton yarns with Ekotex and GOTS certification, designed by Tiziano Guardini, internationally recognized for his commitment to sustainable fashion.

Santoni

Giuseppe Santoni has transformed the family company into an example of responsible management throughout the supply chain. The Santoni headquarters are made up of 90% recyclable materials, structured for rainwater recycling and recovery, and run solely on solar energy provided by over four thousand panels. The entire production is made from high-quality raw materials treated with natural methods. From this comes the Santoni Rethink project, whose models from the S/S 21 collection are made of soft chrome-free suede processed with vegetable tanning, featuring a sustainable material sole thanks to the use of marine algae.

Ecoalf

The Lost Colors collection from the Spanish brand Ecoalf, for S/S 2021, has saved 45 million liters of water, reduced CO2 eq emissions by 242.8 tons, and recycled over 850,000 plastic bottles.

Yatay

Yatay, the brand of premium eco-sustainable sneakers handmade in Italy, adds a new color to the S/S 2021 collection. The sneakers are machine washable, comfortable and breathable, with natural ecru hemp and/or tone-on-tone bio-leather laces, a distinctive packaging with the exclusive Yatay box with a Backgammon set. All concepts of re-duce, re-use, and re-cycle are also applied to the packaging, reinventing the box cover as a Backgammon board to play with instead of throwing it away. The dice (and game pieces) are placed in a small bag made of bio-based materials, scraps from the production process, all different and unique.
