The Reebok Blacktop Battleground were born in America in the ’90s drawing inspiration from the early street basketball courts, the famous “playgrounds.” The kids who couldn’t afford to join a basketball team would gather at these courts, often located in the less affluent areas of big cities, to challenge each other and play their favorite sport. Reebok understood the need to create footwear that would represent belonging, giving rise to the Blacktop Battleground. The 2014 re-edition features neon prints, tribal graphics, and a gum sole, reminiscent of the past two decades but with a keen awareness of today’s market challenges.
