In the second season of Succession, there is a scene where the eldest son Kendall Roy, the tormented leader and virtual successor of the powerful Roy family, grabs a pair of Lanvin sneakers made of suede and calfskin from the trunk of his city car. “Oh, damn, yes!”, Roy exclaims as he takes out the shoes from a Lanvin-branded powder blue box. Shortly after, upon arriving at a meeting with the founders of a downtown start-up, he tells them, “I bought this pair of sneakers on my way here, because I thought I’d see you guys dressed like a bunch of f***ing Björks, and I wanted to make a good impression.” Although Roy may not know how start-up wizards dress and we would have liked to warn him that their favorite look consists of Patagonia fleeces and Stan Ray pants, he was partially right in asserting that wearing an extra special pair of Lanvin-branded sneakers is a sure way to make a great impression.
Likewise, Jeremy Strong, the Emmy Award-winning actor who plays Kendall Roy in the renowned HBO series, recently caught everyone’s attention on the red carpet of the world premiere of Netflix’s Don’t Look Up, partly thanks to the stunning skater sneakers he had on. I believe you have guessed that they were Lanvin. A shoe that doesn’t go unnoticed, even if we overlook the rest of the attire.
The sneakers in question were cleverly nicknamed “The Curb“, the sidewalk, in reference to where one would risk slamming their face if they actually tried to ride a skateboard in them. Released at the end of 2020 as part of Lanvin’s AI'21 collection, their design has won over the feet of the most stylish men on the planet, including Timothée Chalamet, Evan Mock, Justin Bieber, and the late Virgil Abloh.
This particular sneaker model, characterized by incredibly round uppers and exaggerated laces, is an authentic parody of the oversize skater style from the early ’80s. To have a clear reference, just think of the designs of Osiris D3, eS, and DC worn by artists like Tony Hawk, Pete Wentz, and skater girl Avril Lavigne from the famous video Sk8er Boi. Terrible. Designed by former Loewe designer Bruno Sialelli, who has been creatively directing Lanvin since 2019, the sneakers are in line with a resurgence of Z-Boy style that has been making its way into fashion since the beginning of 2021. It is no coincidence that Harrods recently unveiled a surprising partnership with Palace Skateboards, Tiffany ventured with Supreme, and 1990s skate brand No Fear was put in the spotlight for a collaboration with the Swedish multinational H&M. Meanwhile, everyone from Chalamet to Tyler, The Creator to Bieber and Kanye West can’t get enough of Dickies work pants, and for Spring/Summer 2022, Dior has introduced the new B713, a sneaker that for the first time the prestigious French fashion house designs inspired by skate subculture.
Want to ride the halfpipe and scream “Oh, damn, yes!” like Kendall Roy did? Here’s a pair of “The Curb” worth smashing your face for.
