The midsole, the base of the shoe, is responsible for absorbing and releasing energy during running, cushioning impacts when the foot lands on the ground. It is the battleground of the world’s major footwear giants in the running world, each presenting their proprietary technology: adidas has Boost, Nike has recently launched React, and Under Armour responds with HOVR, available in two running shoe lines: Sonic and Phantom.

What is HOVR. The ideal midsole cushions running and ensures perfect energy return. To achieve this, HOVR utilizes a patented foam in collaboration with Dow Chemical, the world’s second-largest chemical producer.

“The development of HOVR was inspired by understanding that for a runner, each step has an impact equal to 2-4 times their body weight, anchoring them to the ground,” says Dave Dombrow, Chief Design Officer at Under Armour. “HOVR’s midsole returns great energy and makes every step light and effortless.” The core cushioning that guarantees these results is encapsulated in a knit web called the Energy Web. The shoe can absorb impact, minimizing fatigue.

The HOVR Sonic is designed for distance runners, weighing about 272 grams with an 8mm drop. The HOVR Phantom has a knit upper, a sock that encases the foot, providing comfort and adaptability around the ankle.
