New Balance, given the ongoing and urgent need for personal protective equipment across the United States, has scaled back its production and is currently developing masks for general use. Created in collaboration with local medical institutions and research and development organizations, New Balance produced its first face mask prototype less than a week ago. By mid-April, the goal is to produce up to 100,000 units per week in the Lawrence, MA and Norridgewock, ME factories. Additionally, they are simultaneously modifying the current mask design and material specifications to meet FDA requirements and create a product that can be safely used according to standard health criteria and is suitable for frontline medical personnel.
New Balance will distribute the masks through coordination and communication efforts directly targeting medical facilities in the states of Massachusetts and Maine where the factories are located, in order to best meet the demand and supply needs of masks in the area. In parallel, New Balance, along with the research and development team, is quickly responding to other requests for protective equipment such as gowns and shoe coverings.
