Converse x J.W. Anderson is a luxury collection created for bold spirits influenced by opposing styles of mind; understanding J.W. Anderson also means understanding who influences him, one of these people is Larry Clark, a creative collaborator who handled the visual storytelling for the designer in his collaboration with the brand Converse.
Clark is considered a pioneer of Youth Culture, he is a famous American director and photographer known for his controversial films about teenagers and his photography book Tulsa. Anderson himself has stated: “I think Larry Clark is really important and significant in portraying youth culture. And when you believe in something, no matter how right or wrong it may seem, you just have to show it. Real life is hard – some people find it hard to process.” This collaboration gives birth to one of the most anticipated artistic collaborations of the season, the first release of the highly anticipated Converse x J.W. Anderson collaboration is scheduled for December 14th. The unisex collection intentionally blurs the lines of what is traditionally considered masculine and feminine through bold colors, glam glitter, and precious details in Converse’s classic style. Together, the brands celebrate the collaboration through the lens of youth culture pioneer, Larry Clark. The creative commitment explores the provocative and bold space of opposing but complementary ideals. The glitter models have been described with these words by the designer: “Glitter_Gutter is born from the idea of breaking the iconic silhouettes with something unexpected.” “Taking glitter out of a glamorous context and wearing it with a pair of washed cotton pants, for example.” To create this union, where past and future meet, Anderson has combined the contrast of pop art, vintage-inspired details, and unexpected materials, along with his personal love for Converse – with the three most attention-grabbing shapes within the collection. Here’s what he said about his approach to each iconic model.
“This is a universal iconic model that everyone should have. They are part of my everyday uniform. I will wear them until they fall apart!”. Anderson stated about the Chuck '70 model, and being a key piece of Anderson’s personal look, it was only right that the Chuck '70 became the main model in Glitter_Gutter. “I wanted to make sure the shoe was modern, but also highlighted its timeless features,” added the designer.
