There’s no doubt that 2018 has been a golden year for menswear. Vogue America also took notice and, for the first time, decided to delve deeper into the matter by turning to major online retailers – such as MatchesFashion, Mr Porter, Ssense, and Moda Operandi – to understand the real desires of men in terms of fashion: what they buy and, most importantly, which categories and trends drive their purchases. In addition to the confirmation of logo mania, a trend that does not seem to be set aside even for the next season, it emerged that more and more men prefer to invest in a piece of clothing that is often both overrated and necessary: the pant.

Whether they are branded by the most desired names of the moment – Gucci, Balenciaga, and Off-White – or not, designers and celebrities have turned their attention to pants first (think of the metallic and super eye-catching versions recently sported by Pharrell Williams in Chanel and A$AP Rocky in Dior Homme), and men worldwide are taking notice. They are beginning to invest in pants as much as in sneakers. It’s hard to think of a displacement in terms of sales leadership: in an era dominated by streetwear, the sneaker will remain one of the best-selling items in 2019. But now, a greater awareness in mixing sportswear, formalwear, and casualwear also allows experimenting with a true essential of menswear, which for too long has been preferred not to be too daring. And in an industry, that of men’s clothing, which according to everyone has grown much faster in the last 10 years than its female counterpart, the final consideration is that men’s attention to what they choose to wear – both formally and in everyday life – has definitively surpassed the single branded accessory.
