Or from rain, depending on the circumstances. For the rest, the inspiration clearly comes from the lederhosen, the traditional short leather pants with attached suspenders: the upper is in full-grain leather, just like the inner lining, with white and red checkered patterns like the typical shirts of Oktoberfest.
