Remember this name Mylo. Because in the future we will hear a lot about it. Especially in the world of fashion where sustainability has taken over. Mylo is a material obtained from mycelium, found in the roots of mushrooms, which resembles leather in appearance and touch. And for some days now, Mylo is also the name of the first adidas sneaker made with this material. The German brand, which aims to eliminate plastic from its sneakers by 2024 using only natural materials, presents – what is currently just a concept, but could become a reality within a year – the first Stan Smith sneaker made with mylo.
“The introduction of Mylo as a new material is a major step forward in our ambitious plan to eliminate plastic waste,” says Amy Jones Vaterlaus, global head of future at Adidas. “We must learn to work with, not against, nature and put all our efforts into finding innovative solutions created responsibly with resources that renew at a sustainable pace.”
This innovative project was made possible through a unique and collaborative partnership with Bolt Threads, a biotechnology company dedicated to creating the next generation of advanced materials. And already engaged in the fashion front with other brands.
Elsewhere, the British label Stella McCartney has announced that it will use Mylo in its future collections and has already implemented the use of the fabric in clothing prototypes, including a bustier top and a pair of cargo pants. The group Kering (Gucci, Saint Laurent, Bottega Veneta, Balenciaga, among others) is also ready to bet on the new plant-based leather, not to mention the luxury house Hermès that has decided to use mycelial leather Sylvania developed by the startup MycoWorks (also from California like Bolt Threads) for its Victoria travel bag model. In short, the path seems to be set.
